Project Overview:

EAMV is a pioneer state-of-the-art medical consumables manufacturer in the East African market region, commenced operations in August 2021 and received it was officially launched by the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Museveni, on December 11, 2021. EAMV specializes in the production of surgical and examination gloves for the Uganda and East African markets, with plans to expand its production portfolio to include syringes and condoms.

Presently, EAMV boasts a production capacity of 95 million pieces of gloves annually. The company's value proposition lies in delivering high-quality medical gloves with significantly shorter lead times, ranging from three (3) to five (5) days, compared to the three (3) months required for imported gloves.

Accomplishments to Date:

EAMV has secured a ten-year off-tariff agreement from the government of Uganda, with government glove purchases constituting approximately 30% of the market. Technical consultants with over 30 years of experience in glove production from Malaysia have been on board, and 10 Ugandan technical personnel underwent a year-long training program in Malaysia. The operationalization of EAMV has yielded several impactful outcomes:

  • Creation of 300 direct jobs and over 5000 indirect jobs.
  • USD 17.8 million in savings on imports.
  • Technology transfer to the Ugandan market.
  • Improved accessibility of much-needed medical gloves in Uganda, with a supply capability within 5 days compared to the 3 months required for imported gloves.

Rationale for Expansion:

  • EAMV, being the first glove manufacturer of its kind in Uganda and East Africa, seeks to capitalize on the growing untapped market.
  • Current production capacity of 95 million pieces per annum only captures approximately 70% of Uganda's total glove market (134 million pieces) and 12% of the estimated regional glove market (810 million pieces).
  • Suboptimal factory operations due to high fixed costs present an opportunity to leverage available land, operational structure, and fixed costs to increase production eightfold.
  • Expansion aims to enhance accessibility to surgical and examination gloves, critical given the reliance on imports from Asian manufacturers with lead times of 3 months, further impacted by global supply chain disruptions.
  • The Uganda health sector, still reeling from the shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, can benefit from increased local production, mitigating supply chain disruptions and ensuring a more resilient healthcare system.

Employment Impact:

EAMV's expansion plan is poised to create an additional 511 direct jobs and 1115 indirect jobs, further contributing to economic growth and stability.
